AQUA HTML help sample

AQUA is a large database system developed by Birmingham City Council and used by local authorities throughout the country to manage and report on education provision for post-16 year olds.

Approach

Because Aqua is distributed on CD-ROM and installed locally on computers, compiled HTML help (.chm) format was deemed the most effective and appropriate solution. The help comprised:

  HTML based help centre

A comprehensive help centre. Used as the main source of information for user's trying to get to grips with the functionality of AQUA.

  Context-sensitive help pages

Context-sensitive help pages. Due to the size of the AQUA software, a key time saving technique for the user was to have help accessable for each page within the AQUA system. As such, we also developed context-sensitive help pages which were incorporated into the application and made available to users at the click of a button. This meant that the users had immediate access to information relevant to the task they were currently carrying out.

Because HTML help can't be viewed over the web, you must download it and view it locally. To download the help centre (zipped), click here.
